About Rivers of Nihil
Rivers of Nihil is an American progressive death metal band from Reading, Pennsylvania. Jake Dieffenbach (vocals), Brody Uttley (guitar), Jon Topore (guitar), Adam Biggs (bass), and Jared Klein (drums) formed the band in 2009.
The band’s music features complex time signatures, atmospheric soundscapes, and technical guitar work. Moreover, their lyrics often explore themes of nature, the environment, and the human condition.
Rivers of Nihil’s current lineup consists of Jake Dieffenbach on vocals, Brody Uttley on guitar, Jon Topore on guitar, Adam Biggs on bass, and Alan Balamut on drums. Furthermore, Uttley is known for his use of extended-range guitars, including 8-string and 9-string models.
The band has toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe, sharing the stage with notable acts such as Black Dahlia Murder, Revocation, and Obituary. Additionally, in 2018, they embarked on a tour with Dying Fetus, Thy Art is Murder, and Enterprise Earth.
An interesting fact about Rivers of Nihil is that their 2018 album “Where Owls Know My Name” features saxophone and trumpet in addition to traditional metal instruments, adding a unique and unexpected element to their sound. Critics received the album well, and it earned the band a spot on many year-end “best of” lists.
Rivers of Nihil’s began in the early 2000s when Dieffenbach and Biggs played together in a local band called Jane. After that band dissolved, the two began writing music together again and eventually formed Rivers of Nihil in 2009. The band released their debut album “The Conscious Seed of Light” in 2013 and have continued to gain popularity in the metal community with each subsequent release.
